Getting Things Done

Most people start a number of tasks meaning to complete them, but getting things done is something they never accomplish. “Don’t put off for tomorrow what you can do today” may sound cliched but it is an important fact that you need to come to terms with. Putting things off for another time is letting all the mole-hills in your life become huge immovable mountains, and mountains are formidable things. They create fear and leave you feeling less than confident. Hence it is important to get things done then and there.

How to get things done?

Start by writing down all the tasks at hand. A written list is much more effective and dependable than your memory. Make the list bold and put it in a place that is prominent, where you will see it often. This is the first step to getting things done.

Prioritize. Classify all the tasks at hand into four categories – urgent and important, important but not so urgent, urgent but not important and the things that are neither very important nor very urgent. This categorization will help you approach the tasks in order of importance and urgency.

Planning out your whole day and each task will help you get through your day more productively. Planning helps you achieve much more than no planning at all.

Get organized When you have everything in order around you, it is easier to go through the list of tasks that you have to do. Being organized avoids wastage of time used up in searching for things and finding every in it right place.

Avoid clutter Get those things that are just crowding your space out of your way. Clutter eats into your productive time. they provide all the distraction that you don't need at all.

Set smart goals. Goals need to be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely.

Learn to delegate. Sometimes, our problem is that we never learn to delegate. Delegation is not only a way of getting more work done but it is also providing an atmosphere for another person to grow and develop. Remember, when you delegate, don’t expect the person to do things your way and keep interfering with the task. Delegation is time for you to get your work done.

Motivate yourself. Motivation is a decision from your side to make things happen. Without motivation, it is very difficult to get things to happen. Stay motivated.

Use you resources effectively. Sometimes, many things can be automated. What can be automated saves you a lot of time and effort.

Learn to Brainstorm. When you run out of ideas, or you’re stuck in a rut, brainstorm with your team. Do not vote down any suggestions as useless. Sometimes, crazy ideas can be your key to get you out of the rut.

Tick each item off your list and watch your list become smaller and smaller, giving you more energy to get through them all.

Make sure to take time for yourself. Allot time for yourself. This is your time to refreshand re-energize yourself . Do not let your tasks eat into this time. It is important to take those breaks to get through the day.

Do those tasks that you find most difficult first and get them out of the way. The logic is that you will approach these tasks when you’re fresh and energetic at the beginning of the day and get them out of your way. It will be easier to handle the simpler or more interesting jobs even when you have less energy.

These are easy ways to get things done. Try them.
I am sure this way you'll get things done!!

  1. Wonderful advice with lots of simple tips on how to get things done.

The last point about undertaking the most difficult task I understand the logic there but sometimes I might start on an easier task to limber up my mind before progressing to a slightly more challenging task.

Excellent blog post and a thoroughly enjoyable read - Great job!

  2. Thanks Ritchie, I understand what you mean. The difficult tasks are what makes us put things off.. and they are difficult to tackle first.. but it is sensible to do it when you have all your energy and concentration at your disposal. At the fag end of the day we generally have little patience and very little energy. These are no hard and fast rules and every person should adopt what works best for them.
    I appreciate this point that you have raised, it gives me an opportunity to deal with it. Thanx . :-}
